I'm seriously considering the forest service cabins as well. I believe another poster added that they go pretty quickly, so I'll get going on my plans!
Yeah, you should be able to rent one if you're flexible on which cabin and on the week. Some cabins you can drive to and some you have to hike in.

I did a quick search on Craigslist and found a number of log cabins where you can see the logs on the inside of the cabin....they're out there.

Of course your being picky. We all are and it's just as hard for me to find vacation cabins.

Also check out Chico Hot Springs. You can rent cabins there and you get a hot springs resort onsite as well as an added bonus.

You know, I've never checked out Craigslist. . .I just opened it in another "tab", so I'll be searching it pretty soon. Thanks for your help and suggestions. Hopefully we'll get something lined up and in a few months I'll have awesome vacation pics to share!

Neither, I want a log cabin. I guess the only thing that matters is I don't have more criteria than my husband's ex-wife.

These are a couple I had checked out for my hubby and his fishing buddies to rent. I found the cabins varied widely. Generally they go anywhere from 20 to 75 a night depending on size and ease of getting to it. Some of the sweetest ones you have to pack into. A couple are adequate for persons with limited mobility. Generally sleep 5 to 8. Simply furnished, with pots and pans and dishes in the kitchen area. Wood stove. Sometimes electric. Very basic. Bunks-you bring your own bedding and towels. Many have outhouses. Applications are due by March 1 and are put into a lottery, so the more you apply for the better your chances. They get back to you pretty fast-a week or so. If you want to bring a dog make certain it is allowed-some places it isn't.

I would do a tent camping trip but many folks don't want to rough it like that. For those who don't want to rough it and also don't want a glitzy hotel stay you might want to look into this place.

The lunch menu is sort of like "bar food" but for dinner the the quality level jumps 100 + points ! The hot spring mineral soaking pool is great. The Clark Fork River is across the road and Sanders County in general is a beautiful undiscovered gem. Take a driving tour down to Thompson Falls (named after the unsung hero David Thompson - google that dude) and you may see a few of these guys.
