I grew up in the Flathead Valley, and IMO the urban sprawl is horrible! I can barely stand to visit there for more than a couple days.
Would you believe they actually paved much of the road around Hungry Horse Reservoir, and the access roads and campsites in some Forest Service Campgrounds are also paved? Oh, well, at least they haven't installed full hookups in the campgrounds.
Yet.
My home town (Hungry Horse) has become nothing but a tourist trap.
Kalispell used to be a nice little farm town, now it is a farm town trying to be a tourist/shopping/medical center. Actually, it is succeeding in all three quite well.
That is not necessarily a good thing.
Whitefish is, IMO, a ski town with delusions of grandeur. I would not live there.
Columbia Falls...
Well, what can one say about a town which survived based on lumber mills and an aluminum plant? There is only one lumber mill operating now, and the aluminum plant is closed and may soon be torn down.
Thank you environmentalists!
It is still beautiful there, but as the saying goes; "You can't eat scenery!"
