I am seeking advice on the best driving route from Helena, MT to De Soto, Kansas in November. I will be traveling with my dog and will need to stay at pet friendly motels and stop at rest stops. Thank you.

Super 8 motels are usually clean and accept pets. They are usually cheap and have wifi.

Stick to the interstates drop south on the 15 to the 90 over to Billings and south towards Denver catch the 70 east. Interstates are usually a priority and kept plowed and open.
Have winter supplies in the vehicle Blankets and food keep gas tank full. We use Best Western as well as they are a pet friendly place.

To save lots of travel time take the truck route, get off I90 at Big Horn Battlefield onto US212 and drive across to Belle Fourche then get back on I90 at Spearfish...then drive across South Dakota to Sioux Falls. Then drop onto I29 south. It is by far fastest way. We make trip to Iowa half dozen times a year. This route is a priority as truck route to keep open and has much better road maintenance in winter than freeway to Sheridan. I drive US212 all the time.

Holiday inns are usually pet friendly. Call ahead & ask.

Rest stops will likely be closed for winter.

It's about 500 miles Helena to Belle Fourche. You could stay at Spearfish or so.

Get behind a semi going across US212 if dark--after 5pm-- to avoid any loose horses on rez part & lots of deer after dark from Ashland to Dakota line.

Get fuel at Billings last exit, called Johnson Lane at Town Pump, there is McDonald's and deli stuff. Then back onto freeway, stay on I90 at freeway split take sign says Sheridan Wyoming. There is fuel again at Broadus--- the Sinclair station on way out of town, they have good deli sandwiches.

Some BWs are not pet friendly, in my experience, so calling ahead would be wise. We usually go with Quality Inn, and have yet to find a pet-unfriendly QI.

There are two good Apps that I use to find pet friendly hotels named "Pets & Hotels" and "Bring Fido".
