Well, I would like to see more $ - a scheme like MO - out here. People in MT really do use the land as we spend a lot of time outdoors, and staffing is a real problem as well as funding the programs we need.

I don't know about wardens in other states, but I personally feel like ours here spend a lot of time out patrolling around and not sitting "on their butts" or in an office. For example, I have personally seen 4 different wardens out when we've been hunting or fishing in the past 2 years, and we go to some far out places. Always had good interactions with them. We also run into them at events at FWP when we are putting our 2 cents in, and when we've had questions in our own region or in other regions in the state, almost all of them have taken the time to call us back, even during hunting season or on weekends when they are crazy busy.

In terms of hunting on your own land, at my dad's cattle farm in Virginia, he has to shoot in season and he has to get landowner tags for his deer every year. It isn't hard, but he certainly has to follow the rules or he'd be breaking the law. So, as others stated, I don't think it's wild and unregulated basically anywhere, regardless of whether it's public or private.

If I read this right, one must spend 18 bucks to get a "conservation license" and a "base hunting license" BEFORE they can buy any hunting or fishing license. And it costs a resident 21 bucks for a fishing license?

I am surprised mainly because here in MO, where I am currently "stuck", one buys a fishing license for 7 bucks. A small game license to hunt anything other than turkey or deer, including wild hogs, is 12 bucks. A deer tag is 17 bucks, and 7 bucks for a bonus tag for does and button bucks. No other license needed. No prerequisite licenses you have to buy before they will "let" you buy a hunting or fishing license. What gives? The way I like to hunt and fish, I might need a second job just to buy licenses and tags!

Holy smokes that is cheap.

I lived in San Diego for 20 years. I shot lots of doves and quail, but gave up on deer hunting early on.

It costs me $126.50 to hunt in Montana. Primarily Deer, upland game and waterfowl. That includes one b tag (doe).

Back in WV it would either cost me $70 (that's one doe permit included)- IF I WAS NOT ON MY OWN PROPERTY.

If I hunted the land I used to own I did not have to purchase anything other than a Federal waterfowl stamp. I used to routinely bag 3-5 whitetails a year, no out of pocket expense.

That being said- I'd rather hunt in Montana
