Looking at the area and find that most homes have a propane tank. Is the reason because electrical rates are so high? What is a typical electrical bill? 1500-2000 sq ft 3 bed 2 bath that has normal insulation. I understand that most homes also depend on a wood stove.

I don't know about everyone, but besides wood I find propane to be much more reliable here insomuch as storms don't knock out the propane lines while they do knock out power lines.

As to the power rates, about 7cents per KWH.
Residential Electric Rates

For my 1K foot square 2 bedroom, my rates run about $50/month, my refrigerator is new and energy efficient, my freezer I keep out in the garage so a lot of the year, it's warmer inside the freezer than it is outside it. I have a propane water heater and don't use a lot of electric toys like big screen TVs etc. so my usage is under 500 KWH/month.

I use propane heat for when I'm not home to keep the fire burning. I don't like electric, it just isn't warm enough to be comfortable when it's -40 with a 50 MPH wind blowing.

MTSilvertip,
Thank you. I wasn't thinking about power outages.
