There are hundreds, thousands of threads on various places and aspects of each state. There are several recent ones on comparisons. You're going to have to try specific questions to get much new.

On lakes, forests and mountains, both states are blessed. In Wyoming and central / eastern Montana they are in islands or pockets so to speak though these zones are still huge- hundreds and thousands of square miles for each one of them. In western Montana it is pretty much wall to wall forests and mountains. Tens of thousands of square miles of them.

Which place has a higher cost of living? I get the impression that it costs less to buy a house in Wyoming.

Depends on which part of each state you are comparing.

In Wyomng the main expensive place is Jackson. Almost anywhere else is doable by the non-rich. In Montana, the most expensive are Bozeman, Missoula and Whitefish. Most other places are doable.
