Default inversion

I feel alittle stupid right now; what is inversion?

I have read a few things about this happening in Missoula.

Does that just mean that it's often cloudy? Does it have something to do with a "jetstream flow" or "el-nina"?

Inversion is when the temp is upside down. haha

Normally, it will be cooler up on the mountains and warmer in the city as long as it's overcast. When an inversion is in effect, it's warmer at the higher altitudes and cooler in the valleys.

But in some places, it's naturally cooler in the valleys and warmer in the higher altitudes. for them an inversion is when it's warmer in the valley and cooler in the mountains.

Depends where your at and what the norm is. An inversion is when the temps in the area are opposite of they normally are.

How about around Kalispell? I've heard that Missoula has alot of problems with this but is Kalispell as bad?

My family lives in the Ronan area & I'm looking to move closer to them. I have asthma which is why I am concerned.

Thank you,
Kelly

Well, "inversions" aren't necessarily bad, it just depends. Kalispell does get inversions periodically, but the locals love them because you can go ski on Big Mountain and look at the clouds below while skiing in the sun. It's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen, it just looks like your skiing in heaven.

As far as air quality, valley's in general are more of a problem for bad air than open land (like Bozeman). The Flathead does experience times when the air goes stagnet and the pollution will go up because no fresh air is entering the valley. Stagnet air or invesions really aren't the problem there, it's the forest fires in the summer. When the inversions in the summer trap in the smoke from the forest fire, then the pollution goes way up.

In general, people with asthma do pretty good in the Flathead and I didn't hear people complain about it. Dust in the summer from the roads can be another concern - you may wish to live off of a paved road rather than gravel road to limit dust exposure. They will oil some of them in the summer but it only helps for a little while.
