What MT cities have the mildest winters? Lots of snow is ok, but extremely cold wind is what I want to avoid. The kind of wind that can give you frostbite in a few minutes.

Billings is your best bet. It can still get cold, but it's generally milder than most places.

Windchill temperatures which can cause frostbite occur across all of Montana. Below zero tenps which can cause frostbite without wind occur across all of Montana. Winter can be truly brutal.

The northwest portion of the state has by far the least wind.

Billings has shorter winters, but wind is an issue.

??? Compared to Livingston, no way. The reason Billings has milder winters is due to warm winds called Chinooks that come out of Canada. The warm winter wind helps melt the snow and blows a lot of cloud cover out of the Yellowstone valley.

I didn't say compared to Livingston. I've lived in probably 10 states and visited almost all 50. Compared to any place I've ever lived and most I've visited the wind is outrageous.

Truth.

"Tropical Paradise in MT". Um.....maybe you'd like to rephrase your question? Tropical and Montana are two words that go together like [mod edit, peanut butter and jam?].

NW MT has less wind than out East, but we still get plenty of wind overall.

That is very true, although Casper, Wyoming does give it a run for its money.

You can't live in MT and avoid wind and cold that could give you frostbite in a few minutes. Doesn't mean it will last all winter, but it will happen.

And while the center swathe of the state between GF and Billings has the "Chinook Winds" which keeps them warmer, they can get cold and windy. I was driving home from the hi-line this morning and about an hour north of Billings it was so windy when I stopped to let my dog out that the door flew open and the wind pushed the car forward almost a foot. I had to stand in front of my dog so he didn't blow away in the pet area.

There is less wind in Billings than Livingston, but that doesn't mean that the rest of the state doesn't get windy too.

California and North Dakota have a lot less wind I've heard.
