Hi All,

Looking to move to Montana, but don't want to pay the real estate in Bozeman.

My questions is...

What is the next up and coming town east of the Rockies?

I am not interested in Billings.

Any suggestions, thoughts, ideas or predictions?

There are commutable areas near Bozeman that are more affordable. But you're right. Probably due to the proximity to skiing and Yellowstone.

I really don't see anything going gangbusters in Montana outside of Missoula, Bozeman, and the Flathead area. No sane person is interested in Billings.

Depends what you mean by "up and coming", both Glendive and Sydney had a pretty good run during the Bakken oil boom but things have cooled off the last few years. If the oil fields pick up in the Bakken the economy around Glendive/Sydney will once again benefit.

What size range of town are you interested in?

Would you consider Livingston, Big Timber, Greatt Falls, White Sulphur Springs, Red Lodge / Roberts / Bridger? Sheridan or Cody WY? Spearfish SD?

Agreed. Most of the smaller towns in Montana really don't seem to "up and coming."

I don't think any town in Montana can be considered up and coming. That implies a future real estate/ development boon. Unless some company is going to relocate to MT and bring in a bunch of jobs, I don't see that happening.

Most of MT is very stable. The only reason that Bozeman and Missoula have grown is due to the University systems.

Just curious...why would you say that?

Cut Bank is progressing nicely, with a good future and lots of potential.

My boss's sister is the producer for a new HGTV show featuring a couple trying to be the Chip and Joanna Gaines of Butte, MT and do for the area what the Gaines' are for Waco, TX.

HGTV begins filming Butte home for remodeling show - KXLF.com | Continuous News | Butte, Montana

I think it's supposed to air in July? Some time this summer anyway.

I spent 5 years in Butte and the thought is laughable. Without some MAJOR changes in culture anyway. And of course without that huge superfund site in the middle of town.

But if you want to stake your bets on cheap real estate and a long shot...
