What is the housing like there? I am thinking about apply to the TEP program there, which means that I will most likely have to move after graduation (teaching jobs in the same town as a teaching college tend to be VERY competative), so I don't think that I will want to buy a house while in school, rather I will sell my Oregon home and keep the money to buy a house wherever I eventually relocate. I worry because often small towns it is hard to find places to rent. Are there any locals who could tell me what the town is like? In general as well as the housing market?

Brett, I would have a look at the Montana Standard online classifieds to get an idea of rentals in Dillon. Being a college town it shouldn't be too hard to find housing.

In general, it is not a very big town. The population is still probably less than 4,000. They get more snow than where I am, but there is most everything you would need in the town so you wouldn't have to go outside town to get most things.

There is great fishing, hunting and even a golf course there.

We are also thinking of relocating to Dillon in about a year. We have two boys, age 3 and 6. Can anyone tell me what the schools are like? Class sizes? Good city parks/playgrounds? Is there just one grocery store?
We are originally from a rural town and are used to snow. How are the mosquitoes? Is windy? Do they often have to shut down I-15 due to blowing snow?
What about healthcare? Is there a pediatrician or just family practice?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know much about the housing situation in Dillon but for what it's worth I went to college there and graduated from Western Montana College. I attended before it was part of the University. Loved Dillon.

I was born and raised in Butte but I spent alot of time in Dillon because my aunt and uncle lived there and we were always visiting. My mother actually commuted back and forth to Dillon to get her college degree when she was in her sixties. Of course this is a very small town so it may take some getting used to. I can't imagine it's very expensive. The choices are going to be limited because of the size the town and it would be wise to make your decisions very quickly because once it gets filled up the only other option is to commute from another town and you don't want to do that. It's basically friendly but conservative and I'm afraid you won't find a wide variety of activities to engage in. To be honest, you probably wouldn't end up spending your whole career in this town, it's just too limited, but it could be a stepping stone to other opportunities. But overall, I do have very favorable memories of Dillon. Good luck.

I'm considering going to Montana Western in Dillon, but I have a question about how welcome some of my friends will be. Several are gay/lesbian - not flaming on anything, that's just the way they are. I love the outdoors, but would like to feel confortable having my friends visit. In the upper penninsula of Michigan it hasn't been a problem and folks there just see you for the kind of person you are, not what you are. My friends have loved visiting there, but now I'm moving on and don't know what to find. What about Dillon?
