We are possibly moving to Montana for a job opportunity. We enjoy fly fishing, hiking, etc The job would be in Billings, however on one of our trips we traveled through Red Lodge and "got that warm feeling". We would like to rent first before buying. Any suggestions? Just two adults.

Red Lodge is a beautiful little town, no doubt. It's a tourist town as are many small towns in Montana. Rentals (houses) are few and pricey, generally 1K plus. The commute to Billings is 70 minutes, not that much fun come winter time. At 5,600 ft. elevation winter comes early and stays late in Red Lodge.

Columbus, MT. is a nice alternative to Red Lodge if you're so inclined. Roughly the same population (2,500 +/-), more affordable rent (under 1K), lower elevation (3,600 ft.), shorter commute (40min.) to Billings.

After a few years you'll probably end up living in Billings anyway, most people do. An extra 10-12hrs. a week not spent commuting is pretty valuable time.

I do like Red Lodge, but I really think it is too far to be a daily commute to Billings. Winter driving on that road can be nasty. Take a look at the little towns in between...
Fromberg comes to mind.

I wouldn't commute from Red Lodge. Winters are rough and stay awhile. If you want a small town outside of Billings go to Laurel instead.
