Honest, someone said that people just want to live in rural areas like Missoula, but if that is the truth then why is it that most of the US population lives in large cities? Why? Well, simply put there is a serious lack of diversity and culture in Montana, and a huge lack of things to do. Also, a lot of people in Montana are pretty backwards (like something straight out of Deliverance!). Personally, I hated living in Montana. There is much better outdoor activities in California as well. Montanans always tote how amazing the outdoor activites are, but in California you can go skiing and to a sunny beach in the same day. California also has Yosemite, which is on par with Glacier. There is nothing Montana has that California does not (this includes places that are rural, places with low costs of living, and places with low crime). Serious, I would never return to Montana, and would make it a point to drive around the state if I ever had to go through it again.

Wow [mod cut] I dont live in Montana but if I did and you were there chances are you would be the guy we would want to see gone.
LOL
No doubt Montana is better off without you. Also you give Californians a bad name.

I don't care for Missoula. I really don't. It has become the epitome of urban sprawl, looking and feeling much different than my earlier memories of this area over a decade ago when I visited. I do not care for the higgins hip strip crap either. But I cannot say that my husband and I have been treated in an unwelcoming way there. Many times whenever we've engaged in a conversation with a native, and they find that we're transplants, they've never turned their nose up at us or acted rude. I've had the opportunity to meet a great amount of people over the past couple of years too. Maybe I'm just not running into the mega rude people yet. I find that if I put a smile on my face and treat others around me in a respectful way then I'm treated the same way too.
I like where I'm living though... we love the quiet. I love going for walks and looking at deer grazing nearby. Doesn't take much to entertain me though.

It is amazing to me how many people we have seen come and go in the short amount of time I've been here. So many people move up, the winter passes... and come spring they are packing up and going. The amount of "For Sale" signs left behind in their wake this summer is startling. I'm an Alaska native so the winters here are easy to me. Luckily!

I want to visit Montana, but I like where I live.
Do a google image search "Montana" and your question should be answered.

Awwww, Missoula's great, to visit and then go back home to the woods.
Unfortunately Kalispell figures they HAVE to be the next Missoula and the Hwy 93 corridor is well on it's way to being just that. We're leaving MT soon but not because we don't love the area or people but because I can't take the winters anymore for medical reasons. I can say it's going to be hard to find a comparable area anywhere in the U.S. but try we must, need less cold/snow.

This made me remember when I was staying with my aunt and uncle on their ranch north of Carter -- one day we packed a picnic lunch and went to the beach. Despite being the middle of July, it was overcast and looked like it might turn to winter any moment... see, the "beach" was up at Tiber Dam (Lake Elwell, tho no one called it that back then) and consisted of the point where the dirt road ended and the prairie met the water We were the only people in sight!

That's too bad. I know how you love Montana. Myself, I'm only 56 and have to use a walker. By GOD I'll put up with the snow and cold. Snow and cold don't bother me or agravate things, just hard to push a damn walker in the snow. I'll stick it for now, but who knows?
