I am moving to Helena next summer and love being on the lake. I have kids who enjoy being out on the lake swimming and boating. I am curious to know how long the boating season goes in the Helena. Also if you have any info on average water temperature during summer season that would also be appreciated.

Season? I'd think around 7 months for boating but that is just a guess.

Water temperature? This site https://www.fishingnotes.com/fishing...yon-Ferry-Lake

estimates around 55 degrees today. I'd assume it doesn't get much warmer very often. Average in boating season might be closer to 45-50. But again these guesses. Could be 5-10 warmer. Doubt more than that.

Might be a government produced fishing conditions report or marina with more accurate info but you'll have to dig deeper than I did to find it.

For swimming you'll be better off in Hauser or Holter Lakes. Hauser Lake gets surprisingly warm. Like 80F. I've swam up and down the Missouri River between Hauser and Holter and I don't recall super cold water anywhere along the way. I've swam in Canyon Ferry plenty of times also and it's perfectly fine but a little colder.

We had our boat out as early as March and put it away in October. Of course you won't be swimming some of those months. Canyon Ferry was more of a fishing lake for us. We did our playing on Hauser Lake. Just be careful, lots of people play on Hauser and none of them have any boating ethics.

p.s. the best boating is along the river. Put in at The Gates of the Mountains and cruise up to Holter Lake. There are great places to pull off along the river if you want to play or to take a hike. Plus there's a restaurant that's only accessible by water on the river just south of Holter Lake. I can't remember the name.

Oh, and you can put a small (very small) boat on Lake Helena for fishing only. I wouldn't dream of even sticking my toe in the water.

Also, the boat launch between the York Rd Bridge and Devil's elbow is free. Don't waste your money at White Sandy or Devil's Elbow.
