I drove across the hi-line a couple of summers ago, enroute from North Dakota to Glacier Nat'l Park. It truly is "big sky country" up there, but otherwise I didn't care for it much. Vast stretches of nothingness, punctuated by the occasional boring little town. The winters are similar to northern N. Dakota; bitterly cold, windy, dark, and somewhat depressing.

If you go a little farther south, Great Falls seems like a nice town, though. At least it is big enough to offer some amenities.

Here is a link to the the Wikipedia page for the hi-line. The portion that is near the Rocky Mountain Front is really nice. The photo below the wiki link is of Montana's newest State park and is along the region known as the hi-line, so it's not all flat and boring.
