Default Montana State Parks

Hi there,

Just wondering which State Park you guys like most if you've visited these or if you just visited one and like it a lot as well, let me know thanks.

Anaconda Smoke Stack, Black Sandy, Elkhorn, Spring Meadow Lake, Bannack, Missouri Headwaters, Lewis and Clark Caverns.

IMHO, you can't go too far wrong with any one of these. The headwaters is pretty neat about any season, lot of wildlife and history. During the warm months you have to think about the bugs - there can be a bunch of about every shape and variety. Because I'm interested in history, Bannack is one of my favorites, and the gathering they have there every year is well worth going to. Ditto for Elkhorn; it's one of the best preserved ghost towns we have, and I think there's a project under way to do some more rennovation. ( Good ghost town map - Ghost Town Map | Arizona | California | Colorado | Nevada | New Mexico | Idaho | Montana | Utah | USA | US ) I haven't been to Lewis and Clark caverns for a few years, but the tour through there is worth the money if you don't mind the underground and tight spaces - the last tour I was on someone got pretty nervous and they had to hustle them out.

Another good spot especially if you like rockhounding is Crystal Park up in the Pioneers. Crystal Park - Montana's Gold West Country Great place for kids to dig around, they have a small fee for all day, but worth it. Word to the wise, even if it's hot make sure you have long sleeves and pants handy - sometimes the mosquitoes and deer flies are hungry....

While you're in the area spend some time in Virginia City. Visit the VC players, (an old fashioned comedy act, great for the family, and will have you rolling from laughter, our family and many others have enjoyed them for years) enjoy some fresh home made ice cream, old fashioned candy. However, most of these are offered during tourist season. Also, if you want to grab a quick bite to eat in VC it's a bit pricey, but just over the hill is Ennis, which is more affordable.

My favorite state park is Lost Creek near Anaconda. Although the last time I camped there some loser hippies ripped off some of my campfire wood in the middle of the night !
I guess they thought I wouldn't know but they were the only other people there that night !
