Last summer we went on a big group river float on The Bitterroot River. There must have been over a hundred people on either tubes, kayaks, rafts and canoes. It was sponsored by a bar and a radio station. No cost to participate and they gave the floaters wristbands good for free burgers and beer at the end of the float. It was really fun.

Great little prop shop in Stevensville... best one in the state as far as I'm concerned.

I grew up in Hamilton. Spent a weekend, one summer, up in the lookout on top of St. Mary's peak, just west of Stevi. What an awesome view from up there. It was kind of hard to get up there, however, because we took two wrong trails before deciding to just head straight up the rockslide. Not to mention the high altitude is kinda hard on the lungs. Also, even in the summer, it can get pretty darn cold up there....left the water and pop outside on the decking to keep it cold and it all froze solid .
And, of course, I have frequently attended the Creamery Picnic in Stevi. Good times.

I also grew up in Hamilton and spent a summer on Boulder Pt. Up the West Fork. I understand that BP is no longer used as a Lookout. I always want to spend a summer in Bare Cone LO. You can drive to that one.

It was in the summer of '87 that I spent that weekend on top of St. Mary's. The one thing that is still vivid in my mind is the view of the towns at night, you can see every town from Missoula to Darby. Well, half of Missoula, the western half of Missoula is obscured by the northern end of the Bitterroots. But, I would love to take another trip up there just to see what it all looks like after 20 years of tremendous growth, I'll bet it is a much different picture now.

Anyone who is interested in that big Bitterroot River fun float can call the Canoe Rack.
They did shuttles and provided some rental boats.
