Thought I'd pop in for a moment to touch base on a few of the finer points with regard to Montana traffic laws......

First off.... are there any??... laws that is...

Yes

But many of you who finally do make your move here might find some of these to be a bit odd, or unusual from what you have become used to.

In Montana, if you are arriving from another state with a current (valid) drivers license, then you may not be required by Montana to take any tests..... you would simply trade your out of state license for your new Montana drivers license.... and that's it......

Many cities in Montana don't have regular traffic control (stop signs, yield signs)...... We have operated on what's known as "Basic Rule" for years.
Usually, when approaching an intersection that doesn't have any traffic control, just remember that the person coming from the right has the "right of way"..... so you may have to stop in order to let them pass.

Because Montana might not require "testing" when you get your new drivers license, I would still suggest, and highly, that you read the Drivers Manual anyway...... Sure, you might have been driving for any good number of years, and you might consider yourself to be a good driver..... But even in spite of all of that.... Read the Drivers Manual anyway......
Many who come here don't bother to study up........ And in the end, it creates any number of problems or fatalities, because one went off willy-nilly without learning the rules of the roads here.

You might also discover that your auto insurance rates have increased once you get here..... or, you may discover that you have been dropped by your long time auto insurance carrier....

The reasons for this could be that many insurance companies don't sell insurance to Montana drivers..... nothing bad really, it's just our laws are set up a little differently....and it's really sort of ironic, in that, Montana has some of the safest drivers in the nation, because we experience any number of various driving conditions throughout the year.....

I suggest that you study up on who may or may not do auto insurance coverage in Montana. (what might be cheaper in Washington, might not necessarilly be cheaper or even available in Montana)

Another thing you may want to consider....... Here you have your brand new SUV..... and suddenly you encounter a run-in with a bull moose just around the corner...... be sure you are covered.

On average.... our speed laws still operate on the Basic Rule principles...... some of our speed zones may reflect a faster speed in some of the same kinds of areas that your state requires a slower speed in. So pay attention... oncoming traffic might be approaching faster than what you've grown accustomed to in your home state.

Be careful and be safe...... Montana is a beautiful place...... and it is our hope that we can keep you around long enough to be able to enjoy it....
