Today on CNN's Website:
Soaring food prices a 'global crisis' - U.N. (broken link)
VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said a sharp rise in food prices has developed into a global crisis.
Ban said the U.N. and all members of the international community are very concerned, and immediate action is needed.
He spoke to reporters Friday at U.N. offices in Austria. He was meeting with the nation's top leaders for talks on how the United Nations and European Union can forge closer ties.
-----
Personal side note:
"forge closer ties." They'll be closer all right. The U.N. will eventually replace all national governments to be the solitary governmental rule. 20 years ago that would have sounded ridiculous. Notice how it's less ridiculous sounding now? People will scoff but it will soon be all too probable.

Anyone who cooks knows the word STAPLES. Staples are the basic food groups that support a diet that sustains life. We are living in an economic downturn that affects everyone who is not too rich to care. That means.... budget.... stocking up on basic food supplies and Kalispel does host a lot of mormons... It may happen that mormons become the storekeepers for the hungry of America when the economy fails and the food supply chain fails. Anti-UP for the sons of Moroni! Pregnant new converts to the head of the line!
yup!
Mr. Hinkley told me himself.

To clearify what sounds ridiculous. Are we talking about the acceptance of a global government, or the idea that it is coming?
Twenty years ago, people would have thought you were crazy for thinking that the UN's agenda is to, one day, be the world's government. Today, I'm hoping people are waking up and see this agenda does exist.
An alliance of nations that maintain their sovereignty is what the United Nations' goal should be.
This whole issue is for another thread, so I won't go into an anti-UN rant.

The United Nations does not have the agenda of creating one super-world government. Even if they did, the people wouldn't allow it to happen.

Ya think !!! Immediate action would entale the world leaders to quit paying $118 for a barrel of oil !
Maybe the bare shelves are a sign of better things to come. Maybe these retail giants aren't stocking these items in usual quantities for a reason. They tend to know things that we peeons don't. The only reason I can think of, is that these hi commodity prices are unjustified and the giants know it and are not going to pay the price.
Speaking of how the big guys seem to know things, about 6 months ago when Bill Gates converted his worldly fortune into Euros for the most part, everyone looked at him like he was insane...What's everyone thinking now ?!! When you see Bill buying US dollars, you know we have turned the corner...

Sorry to the OP. I didn't mean to derail the thread. My last comment onthe UN matter is just that over time, events and circumstances cause people to accept things they normally never would have in the past.
At Sam's Club, I won't be buying 50lbs of flour or anything like that. I just hope to be able to get my usual basics.

Same people running out to hoard rice stocked up on duck tape and plastic tarping to "cover their windows" in the event of a chemical attack a couple of years ago. White rice and flour are empty carbs and have almost no nurtitional value whatsoever, so what's the big whoop? Really, no ones' going to starve without them. Be smart, but try not to buy into media hype too much, thinking for yourself is the best revenge.

Exactly, MontanaMom. I buy flour in the smallest size I can find. And I mostly eat brown rice that I get in bulk at my local co-op.
The other stuff I'm buying are things I use a lot of. And, not having a car myself, I go to Sam's once a year to stock up on the stuff I mentioned. Which, for me being single, is usually just a case of each item!
I don't hear anyone at work, or anywhere else, talking about this, so maybe the panic hoarding hasn't hit Minneapolis yet? I hope not. I want smooth sailing when I'm trying to get out of Sam's tonight!

Well, I just got back from Sam's Club here in Minneapolis and they had plenty of flour, oil, eggs and rice. The only thing that was limited in amount to buy was the rice. I have enough of most of my staples to last me another year now. :::sigh:::
