Maybe the bare shelves are a sign of better things to come. Maybe these retail giants aren't stocking these items in usual quantities for a reason. They tend to know things that we peeons don't. The only reason I can think of, is that these hi commodity prices are unjustified and the giants know it and are not going to pay the price.

Speaking of how the big guys seem to know things, about 6 months ago when Bill Gates converted his worldly fortune into Euros for the most part, everyone looked at him like he was insane...What's everyone thinking now ?!! When you see Bill buying US dollars, you know we have turned the corner...
The problem, and the reason oil costs $118/barrel, is that the dollar has been in a tail-spin. Bring strength back to the dollar and you will see commodity prices come back into check. Unfortunately for many Americans and our government, that won't happen until we begin to show a little fiscal responsibility.

Forget Gates...watch Buffet; he's been right on for decades...or better yet, just save more than you spend.

Of coarse the problem is the US dollar being caught in a tail spin. And yes pricing on everything is gauged by the value of the dollar against almighty oil. That's been the cycle of life for the last century.

As long as the US keeps saving the world and borrowing more money than it will ever be able to pay back to do it, and we along with the rest of the world continues to give in to the bullsh*t "valuation" of a barrel of oil, we should all get used to this new way of life !

The US gov show financially responsible ?!! At this point that's freakin hillarious... There is a couple ways to look at that one.

Ya... I pay attention to Buffet too. I was just making a small point with Bill as the media made a big stink out of it.

I'm glad that I'm a meat and potato kind of person. Can't stand rice. Ate enough of it as a child too last me a life time.

I agree with all of you who say it will not get any better till the Dollar is strengthened....
This is just the tip of the iceberg....
Until our Dollar is strengthened and we get more energy independent we will continue down this path...

I did notice tonight at the Walmart in Sherdian,Wy there was no rice, very little flour, did have a good amount of beans though...

I would suggest everyone start growing vegetables and learn more about heirloom seeds and saving seeds.. far more nourishing than Flour, Rice ect...
I stock up on Flour and Rice however and always have, as well as beans... but when they run out I will have seeds and vegetables that will continue to produce viable seeds every year.... Heirloom gardening is becoming more and more of a lost art... 90% of the seeds brought to this country by pioneers/settlers have been lost...

I think you make a good point. I think of it this way, best case it's just a panic thing now and grain stocks will return to normal, albeit at a much higher price so I have a temp supply that didn't cost as much and plenty of fresh produce to eat (due to seed planting) and something fun to do during the summer.
Worst case, I've got food that I can't get at any price or anywhere.

I've met people who bought rice out of panic and I asked them how often they eat it. They just had a strange look on their face (as if in sudden realization) and said, "Not very often, I guess."

Some people hear about a shortage of something and they go out and stock up, even if they don't use it. Insane.

I think you've hit on a brilliant idea. If we can somehow get it on CNN that there is a developing shortage of cow poop, we may be able to bail out the ranchers and boost the Montana economy. Once the panic sets in, especially in the big cities, people will be trampling each other to buy cow poop. Sort of a "herd mentality" (forgive me for that one).

Now someone will say that rice isn't cow poop, and fortunately most of us know that. However, many people post that that want to move to Montana to get away from their job. They are tired of eating poop at work, but they are used to it. I think we could easily convince them that eating cow poop is healthier than management poop, and once they find out it may be in short supply, Katy-bar-the-door! CostCo and Sam's Club may need to hire extra security guards. WalMart will need extra "poop greeters" which will boost employment and the local economy......

do most people still need that much flour? My mom and grandma used to bake bread at home, but I don't have the time for it. Why haven't cake and cookie mixes been ravaged? why not eggs and milk? most things baked with flour need eggs, milk, soda, yeast or baking powder too. Have these items been horded as well? guess when people are in a panic their actions don't make any sense.
