Montana is similar to Alaska, in that Americans from other states think of both states as a sort of last frontier where you reinvent yourself and nobody knows who you are. A cursory glance at Alaska's sex offender stats show they too have very high numbers just like Montana.
Well, if this is true, this is frightening, as even if these losers committed their sexual offenses in other states, it is very unlikely they will stop offending just because they moved here. Those types of offenders rarely stop, even if they "reinvent" themselves, so, just because they started in another state, doesn't make this one safer with them being here. They bring their sick habits with them, and they will reoffend here.

Just remember that when they move here they have to have their information on that list. I'm sure it's discomforting to them to have to do that as 75% of Montanans are well armed!

As I've said before, you'll notice there's not a whole bunch of these crimes reported here where EVERYTHING is put in the papers or is the topic for the area "grapevine".
If I were hearing reports on a regular basis I guess I'd be more concerned but that's just not the case. I'm more concerned about the constant attacks on our access to public lands and the constant cry to limit our ablility to run rivers or explore the forests since that is happening on a daily basis.
If the offenses start rising or get out of control then I'll start being more concerned but until then it's like staying away from everyone because you're worrying about catching the flu before flu season...

In the rural areas most neighbors know more about their neighbors than most other places so we have a built in defense. My understanding the MT list is everything from violent (not sexual - physical battery or fighting) to sexual (from those judged to be non-repeater to predator). My neighbors down the road with a couple teenage girls don't seem too concerned that a family member has rented a house to a man on the list and he lives a mile away next to their grandpa.
