Default I see snakes in SW Montana

Hello,

I'm from SW Montana and have seen tons of snakes. There's lots of them along the Missouri River. In fact, if you're floating the river and get off at the boat ramps, be very careful. You might even see some swimming in the water. However, the great thing is...they rattle, so you have warning. I've never come up on one too close although I've seen them on the railroad tracks and (urgh!) heard them crawling around in the bottom of the outhouse at a campground. Yikes. My old teacher used to catch them and make wallets and whatnot out of them. But, in daily life, I really wouldn't worry about it. They like dry areas near water. So, look out in those areas.

Default snakes in Montana

Yes, there are snakes in many parts of Montana. North of the Bozeman area we have bull snakes and rattlers. Seen some pretty large ones on our last property.

I lived 20 years in MT (Great Falls and Bozeman), mostly out in the country, and the only time I ever saw rattlers was in the park above Trident -- turned over a rock and there must have been a hundred of 'em under there! But never once saw one anywhere else. Lots of other snakes, just not rattlers.

Contrast that to the SoCal desert where I am now... in the past 4 years I've killed 33 rattlers, mostly right on my porch or close to the house.

Rattlesnakes populate all of MT at elevations up to approx. 6000'. After that it is very difficult for them to survive. My family has owned a ranch for the better part of a century at roughly that elevation and no one has ever seen a rattle snake there.... but drive down the road a drop roughly 500' in elevation and we have killed/seen many rattlers.

I would worry more about bears than snakes. Snakes don't run fast. And their bites are smaller.
