Hey guys,

I remember hearing about some cabins the forest service has around Montana that we can rent out for the weekend or whatever. Anybody Ever done this and if so do you have any contact info or anything that might help me make contact.
We live in Helena, my wife and I would like to get one not far from here and spend few days. The neighbor rented one over by White Sulfur and really enjoyed it.

I have heard of similar places when I used to live in Oregon...

Have you tried searching on Montana's Forest Service/ State park website...

Sometimes they have it where you can actually reserve or call a number to reserve one of those places...

Or you could always look up the Forest Service's phone number and inquire too.

Some friends of ours in Helena rented the "indian flats" cabin up on Hogback during hunting season year before last and said it was great. Might be too close to home for you if you are looking to get further away though! Here is the link with all the cabins in the Helena National Forest:

Good luck!

A few of the weekend rentals are actually old fire lookouts with fantastic views.

If you find one to rent (and yes, there are a lot out there, especially in the Gallatin National Forest) be sure to leave the windows open if you use the propane lantern they provide. I rented one a few years back and didn't think about carbon monoxide poisioning - and nearly poisoned my wife in the process. She was getting really woozy before I figured out what was going on.

I've rented the Mill creek and Battle Ridge(Gallatin) and Rock Creek(Pintlars) cabins. Had a great time. Prices range from 30.00 to 50.00 a night and reservations are a good idea.

We vacation as much as we can in Forest Service cabins! It is as cheap as you can get with some of the best scenery around. We are just starting to visit the cabins/lookouts in Montana as we are originally from the Oregon coast. They are mostly all stocked with the essentials you need - pots to cook in, firewood split, mattresses on the bunks. Still it's best to bring what you need since sometimes things have a tendency to "walk away" from the cabins. I'm pretty sure that all FS cabins are rented now through reservations at ReserveUSA and each FS website should have a link from their cabin rental page to ReserveUSA. Our journey with rentals started on our honeymoon! No trip to Hawaii for us - I suprised my wife with the loaded up Bronco and we were off to the forest. Our first stop of 3 different rentals was a fire lookout.

Since we are new to Montana we haven't got around to a lot yet but we have stayed at 2 on the Helana NF and 2 on the Gallatin NF. I took some pics and will post them. It would give you a better idea anyway what you are looking at since the pics off the Forest's website don't give you that good of an idea. We're heading to Eagle Guard Station on the Helena NF in June.

The first 2 pics are of the Bar Gulch Cabin on the Helena NF. They had a forest fire awhile back and most of the trees/scenery is burned but it's a great secluded spot and can even be accessed in the winter with street vehicles. It's a large cabin and would be good size for a group of people.

The next 4 pics are of the Rillway Cabin on the Helena NF. This is another large cabin and can be accessed all year. The driveway to the cabin is right off the paved road. There is a nice creek behind the cabin and the cabin journal claims people have caught fish in it.

The next 2 pics are of Spanish Creek Cabin on the Gallatin NF. This cabin would be great for horse people as there are many trails around and open fields. Cabin is small. 2 creeks come together behind the cabin.

Then last 4 pics are of Little Bear Cabin on the Gallatin NF. This cabin took forever to drive to! But, it is just as good as being in a lookout! The views from this cabin are as good as any I have been to in the Northwest.
