Default Morel Mushrooms...

With all the fires we had around Helena last year it should be a pretty good year for mushroom hunting. I have never done it myself but I would think this would be a good area for it. Anybody know anything about this who can educate me a little?

Anybody know how to cook the mushrooms?

Stuff them with crab meat, season them, sprinkle with olive oil and bake them in a shallow roasting pan.

Be very cautious in the woods while hunting mushrooms, particularly the morels. There have been incidences of some Asian mushroom hunting groups that think the area and practice belongs to them and get very territorial.

If you have never gone mushroom hunting, either take some experienced person along or make sure to have the mushrooms properly identified prior to eating them. There are many types of mushrooms, some deadly. I am including the following link to help you avoid Amanita phalloides (the Deathcap mushroom). They do exist in Western Montana.

Amanita phalloides

I am not trying to rain on your parade. Mushroom hunting and the dishes that result from the find can be a fantastic experience. However, a little caution will help you avoid a liver transplant. Good luck!

The ones I know about don't grow here in the Conrad area. I do know of a few good places where they could be found in the the mountains of western Montana. They seem to be abundant in burned timber areas in the spring.
Folks who know good mushroom hunting areas are very secretive about the exact locations.

Stuffing them with crab sounds really good. I bet they will be out soon with the warm weather. Haven't had time to look around here. I know a few spots, but you have to beat the others looking for them, and the deer love to eat em too. Last year I only found about 8 of em, and the year before filled 3 grocery bags.
