They can be a nuisance, but we don't kill them . They do more good than harm - eliminating the rodents which cause a deadly disease.

Love the praying mantis that eat insects. Hate those house flys, and mosquitos.

They're more like black widows or brown recluse spiders.
They kill pests, but can also kill you.

No cannot kill a human no venom. The females eat the males. They are loners that are fast and ruthless to their pray.

The original post noted "coyotes and rattlesnakes".

I know preying mantis are pretty harmless to humans.

Not me. I love badlands and prairies and desert. I dislike being surrounded by mountains and tall trees; I want to see 30 miles in all directions. Fortunately, I'm weird, and there aren't too many like me to clutter up my hermitage.

They're also technically an invasive species in Montana, but I can't say as I have any complaint.... it's that many fewer absolute pest insects that are not only invasive but also destructive. I get quite a few mantises once the bug season gets into full swing.

I've only seen one at my place, but they're so dang small they're hard to see.
I don't have any problems with them either. Something that eats more bugs is fine with me.

When they're first hatched they're only about 1/4 inch long. But the adults can be up to 3 inches (that's a lot of lunched-on bugs!) I usually get a couple living on my porch. They're not supposed to be able to survive Montana winters, but no one told them.
