When I lived in Hamilton 30+ years ago you could find Huckleberries up Roaring Lion Creek a mile or so. They usually ripen in early August. Keep eyes open for Black Bears.

Used to be wild strawberries here and there too... I vaguely recall we brought some home from the Lincoln area, and they did okay in our garden in Great Falls. Little tiny berries, but strawberries nonetheless!

Wild blueberries grow all over northern Minnesota... they like shade and cool and lots of water. Taste about like blue water, too :P

This thread has me confused. Can anyone tell me where NOT to find huckleberries in western Montana?

Seriously Carla, pick any mountain around Missoula in late July early August, drive up above 4000 feet and start looking. You will find them. I have had good luck up Blue and Black mountain west of Missoula near the lookout.

Or you could go to the farmers market.

And there are tons of good places to pick chokecherries! One of 'em was right in Bozeman, but now it's a warehouse. (North Plum Ave. seems to have been named for all the fruit trees that used to grow there.)
N Plum seems to be an artists street these days, I work not too far from there and there is some really interesting homes/businesses on that street. From painters to sculptors etc...

I lived at 414 N.Plum. The house is still visible on the satellite view. The warehouse to the north used to be a field with chokecherry trees all the way around it. Does that part of town still have gravel streets?

The big old houses around the corner on Peach were full of artists and new-agers when I lived there. Neat houses, even if some of the tenants were from outer space.

Last time I was on plum, it was still gravel. Kind of a really cool hidden spot there, you kind of forget you are in town when you are on the north east side of Bozeman.

Heh heh... yeah, when I lived there, I loved the neighbourhood, it was so green and peaceful and about as rural-character as in-town gets. If I was gonna live in town, that's where I'd want to be!

The hobo jungle used to be partly in that next field, up at the north end of the triangular corner where the warehouse is now, and across the road by the scrap-iron yard. They'd dig holes and cover them with cardboard to stay warm. The regulars made eatin' money sorting stuff at the scrap yard.

There was a guy down here who built a cardboard mansion. It had two rooms (probably 8x10 feet each) and running water, I kid you not. Fanciest hobo shack you'll ever see!!

Lets not forget about all the great wild raspberries here also. Mix them with huckleberries into a pie or pancakes. Heck I'm getting the munchies !
