I am not as familiar where and when to go in Montana. But I loved picking Huckleberries growing up...
Do you make Huckleberry pies? I hear they are really good!
I do remember in the summer months they are usually starting to come out though...

I wish you luck in getting anyone to honestly reveal their spots for Hucks. We've lived here for many years and made some good friends and even still have not gotten any good spots!
You'd have better luck finding out where people hide their money or jewlery or the combo to their safe.
Hucks grow above 3500 feet usually on east facing slopes. I think going up towards lolo would be a good bet.
I highly suggest if you do go Huck hunting you take bear spray at a minimum, I take a sidearm as a backup to the spray. Remember, bears are looking for the same thing you are and don't take kindly to you stealing their food!

jimj is dead-on on this. But if you don't like guns, (bear spray isn't all that effective - just makes the bear mad as hell), be sure to take someone along who runs slower than you do!

Heh heh... I never saw any huckleberries in MT. Had some of their sour cousin the gooseberry growing in my yard, tho.
And there are tons of good places to pick chokecherries! One of 'em was right in Bozeman, but now it's a warehouse. (North Plum Ave. seems to have been named for all the fruit trees that used to grow there.)

The huckleberries are in most of the mountainous areas of western Montana. they are the blue huckleberries that taste like blueberries ( I think they are a mountain blueberry)
