I agree but everyone isn't as quick to include "them" in the "us" as you may be. If that were so, I think it would make some feel more comfortable by not feeling so "different". I do not recommend chasing diversity, so to speak, but, for some, the lack of diversity can be uncomfortable at times. I do think that when you are choosing a place to live you should check into it if it is something that concerns you. No offense to Montana, but the problem here is not that there is a few percent more white people than there is other ethnicities, it's more like other ethnicities are non-existent (besides Native Americans). So those that are different stand out like a sore thumb.I think it all depends on the individual and whether it bothers them or not.

Wink Jamaican moving to Billings MT

Hi,

I'm a young black Jamaican/British woman who will be moving to Billings Montana in late 2015.

The issue of racial diversity was/is an issue that my family were very concerned about, but I like to think that you have to be the change you want to see in the world!

Montana is a beautiful state and I hope that I can change perceptions and have any of my own silent prejudices challenged to by simply being and allowing people to be who they are.

You will probably get some questions about your accent for sure, but I've know a couple other Jamacians here, no problems.

It isn't that other types of people aren't represented here, there are quite a few Fillapinos for instance, in Billings there is a pretty good sized Mexican population.
In the Flathead, and Hi-Line there are Metis as well as American Indians, and lately, quite a few Russians and folks from the former Soviet Union states.

Montana has always been a melting pot due to the chance to get rich quick from mining or timber and now the oil/gas boom.

If you're a good person, a good neighbor, nobody will care what color the wrapper is.

Racial diversity. That is a term that disturbs me. You do understand that diversity means that all will be the same. To be completely diverse means that there will be no cultural differences. I will no longer be proud of my Bohunk ancestery,. I will no longer admire your ancestry, we will all be diverse. How mundane and boring that will be. I kind of like the fact that we are all different. We have different ideals, we have different heritage and that is what makes us special.

Personally, I don't care what color you are, it makes no difference to me, but I like that you are different. That's what makes us special. How would it be if we were all the same color, all talked the same, all acted the same. Just how boring and mundane would that be? Diversity can kiss my ass. I like being different.

That's an interesting take on diversity. Yep, if everywhere has the exact same mix of people, then everywhere is exactly the same and no one can be unique, because everyone has to be the same to fit in. Whereas if here there are more Podunks and yonder are more Twibbles and over there the two run about half and half, you can choose which lifestyle best suits you -- with a diversity of choices, instead of a homogeny of 50% Podunks and 50% Twibbles no matter where you go.

Interesting point. Nothing worse than being different with the same people It reminds of high school where everyone would try to be different but end us in large groups of people trying to be "different" in exactly the same way

Hi,

Yes, I don't have a strong Jamaican accent, more British! I imagine my fiance and I will get many questions as we are an interracial couple too

That's great that you know other Jamaicans!

Interracial couples aren't that different here, lots of "war brides" from Korea and Japan for instance, half the population has at least some American Indian Blood, or is currently with an Indian, so who cares?

I dated a gal for a quite a while that was about 1/4 Indian, but she wasn't sure what tribe. After being with her for a while I am convinced it was Apache

Your British Accent will definately stick out and folks will probably think you're Canadian.

One of my Jamacian friends was a former Corporal in the US Marines, Good guy, really good with repairing a rifle and he worked as a gunsmith when I knew him.
He got tired of the cold and moved to Arizona and I haven't heard from him in a whle, but you can run into people from anywhere here.

Good Luck.

Quite a few interracial couples around Bozeman nowadays. Doesn't draw a second glance. But if you do get stares -- it's usually people wanting to ask questions but being too polite to accost a stranger. That's your cue to say hello first, so they'll feel free to talk to you!
