Tourism - Baker, Montana
Baker is an 85 boring miles drive to Miles City and WallyWorld, which is now a super store

I no longer shop there, I'm boycotting them. Since I'm a veteran and go to the VA in Sturgis, SD, I shop at Pamida and a quite nice grocery store.
Expect to pay fairly large city prices for homes....especially with acreage. While the oil fields aren't exactly booming, they are doing steady work in the area, bringing in people that have $$$ to spend. So, the locals are raising prices. On top of that, with western MT ranches being sold for subdivisions, this area has seen those ranchers come to eastern MT and pay what is being asked....even if it's not worth it.
Ft Benton Realty has this Baker property....it's toward the bottom:
Lots & Land While there, look at the Ekalaka lots listed just above it. A friend checked on that property, 5 yrs ago, before it was actually subdivided and was quoted $750 an acre. So why does the Sales Assoc think it's worth more? Dunno. Places with houses in that listing are quite high for this town. Corky sold us this house, which was his sister's, when he was just starting in real estate 10 yrs ago. It was high according to local people, but we felt it was reasonable. That's the crux of the matter. If a person is willing to pay the price, why not raise the price to what the traffic will bear. He's the only one in real estate locally, otherwise most houses here in Ekalaka get sold by a kinda local auction company.
Hunting - Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks
As for hunting, I'm sure there are some white tail, but mostly what is in the area is mule deer and antelope. There are pheasant, other upland game birds, and GOOD turkey hunting. I can't tell you where exactly as the husband has only hunted Turkey south of Ekalaka and the last time he went was several years ago. Unfortunately, his Traumatic Brain Injury is VERY debilitating and he won't be hunting anymore. The last few years, Baker has put on a coyote hunt that have drawn the ire of do-gooders and animal righteous

people. It gets a good turnout. The weekend in Sept after Labor Day has a good black powder shoot. It's in it's 10th year and is now drawing men and women from quite a few states. I don't participate as my weapon of choice is my 22-250, but I do help in the roach coach (actually they do have good food

).
Since you've been in Fargo, eastern Montana's weather shouldn't bother you. I think it's pretty similar. If you have humidity, you won't find much of that here.
Well, gotta go milk the gals (reg. dairy goats). I'll think some more on info for you. If you have more specific questions, just holler.
