Missoula Neighborhoods questions
While we are currently on the waiting list for family housing at the U of M, we still sit 3rd in line and I am fairly concerned that we will not get in soon. I am planning on calling again Monday but for now I have a few of questions.
1.) what neighborhoods do you consider to be unsafe? Vandalism is high, drugs, violence, theft, those kind of things.
2.) What is Lolo like as a community?
3.) which middle / elementary schools do you think would be the best?
Thanks for your help. This forum has been great in helping me out in the past. We are moving sometime after August 18 so any assistance, even if you know of a 3-4 bed place which is 1000 a month or less (preferably with some utilities included) please PM me.

Farview is a pretty safe bet, and the area around Community Medical Center is pretty safe. Out Mullan Rd. is good. I would stay away from downtown neighborhoods, as they tend to be a bit "rougher," imho. Get ahold of a property management company and have them help you find a place. There's usually no fee involved to the renter.
Lolo is nice, but driving Hwy 93 when the roads are bad in the winter can be a little hairy.
Good luck and enjoy the U of M. That's my alma mater and I loved it.

The Sunday Missoulian publishes the weekly Police Report listing the crimes commited like theft, burglary, criminal mischief and some weeks accompanies the article with a map keyed to the crimes. Far and away the North Side and downtown Missoula are "over represented". South Hills area seems to be the safest but there are fewer rental opportunities there.
The University area always has a number of rentals close to the campus and, other than student mischief and drugs, it's pretty safe.
Closest to the University are Paxson, Washington and Lewis & Clark schools. Depending on your grade needs they are all very good schools.
The UM is a great school. My wife and I started there as Freshmen 50 years ago this fall!

Thanks, I had wondered about the North side due to the houses renting there for almost half of the others.
I am looking forward to starting in August but at present my first concern is getting a house before August 20th ish.
