you posted quite some time ago...but I live in Billings, Montana and quite a lot of people here try to "live off the land" as much as they can. You can hunt on Bureau of Land Managment Land and fish in the local rivers not too far off the beaten path. I'm from Texas and I like it here. Let me know if you need any further local info. Happy Holidays!

Does montana want to be a haven for people who are 'tired of the minorities', who seem to obviously have racism issues? I love Montana, and was considering moving there (searching for the best medium small to medium sized city in a fairly socially libertarian/young area) upon completion of school. I grew up in south Texas, and actually agreed with his post up until seeing the 'minorities' part. This stereotype that minorities are 'supported by white tax payers' is a joke. Im a minority, I worked my way through school, worked and paid taxes (which in the region that I worked, went to poor white people and their children, many of whom had the same ideals of mr cadflyer), and choose to go back to school and get a higher degree. Should I be looked down upon for the color of my skin, despite the fact that I am educated, law abiding, and not originally from Montana?

One of the reasons I left texas and choose never to move back was its treatment of minorities. Seeing that Mr. Cadflyer was a police officer reminded me of how racial profiling (and much much worst, ala the jasper and tulia incidents) are such massive problems there. I remember an incident in East Texas in the 90s where the larger part of one of the town sheriffs departments (vader or nederland I think) were all members of or involved in the klan.

I would really hope Montana does not go the route of East Texas. Especially considering the states proximity to Idaho, which (wrongfully and unfortunately) is known as the nations white supremacist capitol. Its such a beautiful place. It shouldnt be relegated to a 'whites only' region. Espcially with the new direction the country is going in.

I haven't run into many people who are "tired of minorities" as much as I've run into people who're tired of the crud that people are bringing here from elsewhere no matter what color they are. We're seeing our crime go up and civility go down and that's what's got "old timers" worked up.
As for Idaho, unfortunately I think Hayden has the rep and at this point still deserves it.

RE: Immigration from California.

Everybody: you have to know that this immigration problem is the fault of REPUBLICAN policies and Presidents, Reagan, Nixon, Johnson, and now Bush! They opened the borders and brought people over by the hoards to further REPUBLICAN interests. Interests such as providing cheap labor for greedy REPUBLICAN business owners. O, you do recall the Vietnan and Korean wars--started by REPUBLICANS whose refugee policies turned "All American" California cities into Little Saigon Koreatown! ? The PUBS couldn't keep their hands out of Russia, Israel, China, Turkey--and VOILA, California is now stuck with Little Moscows, Chinatowns, Little Armenias, Little Israels, Little Bombays! We (4th, 5th, 6th, generation Californians) did not ship these people over here. Your REPUBLICAN presidents--people you voted into office--brought these people over here and to states like Florida and New York! Now people are knocking on your door and you don't like it!

You REPUBLICAN types have always tried to force your will, your rough and tough cowboy politics, on the world. Guess what people? In the end, YOU LOSE! All those years of being the badass kickass manifest destiny cowboy, annexing the Pacific Islands/Hawaii and Puerto Rico, stroking your republican ego in the name of saving the world, have come around to bight you right up the as-s! The Bull has its horn aimed right at the bullseye of your collective a-ss!

Deal with it, as true Californians have been for some time!

P.S. people's definition of Californian is misleading. While many might claim to be Californians they are either transplants from other states or their parents were OR they are 1st or 2nd generation immigrants. They can't be real Californians as California isn't that old and was never this heavily populated. All I can say is, again, deal with it.

I would like to find a small (3-5 acres) piece of land outside of a small town that i could have a garden and do my own hunting and fishing. I want to live off the land as much as possible. I am sick of television, computers, cell phones, noise, heat and pollution. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what i am trying to accomplish?

I'd keep the minority thing to yourself. Montana is a mostly white state with very few minorities, except for Mexicans who contribute to the housing boom around Bozeman/Big Sky. Some of them are cruddy people, but I know just as many Cruddy white people. I moved from Duluth MN, a place where hundreds of welfare abusing people move to every week. Blacks and whites. The nicest cities in Montana (bozeman, missoula) are filled with very liberal people. I feel sorry for most of them , because they have no clew what true liberalism does to an area. Between Union strongholds, and friendly handouts, that way of thinking has crippled the economy in my home town of Duluth. Nobody makes over 10 bucks an hour because there is no natural competition. Even though it is a great city with above average offering to outdoors people, the over liberalism keeps it from being what it could be. I'm a fairly liberal person myself, but recognize the short commings of that way of thinking. Take warning Bozeman people, do not let anyone talk you into Unions. They only protect the ones within the union and destroy the economy in every other way. And don't let anyone talk you into changing Montana into a give away state. That only populates cities with worthless lazy do nothing folks. I'm from that place, and moved here to get away from it.....

Now I have heard it all!! Most republicans I know won't let a mexican cut there lawn let alone want to bring them here in droves. You are a twit! Republicans are the people fighting to keep this country english speaking. They are the ones trying to enforce the rules of citizenship, the rules that generations had to follow. Its the Dems who want to just give this country away to anyone with a voice. Wake up you liberal loon. It is people like you that keep me from calling myself a democrat. Want to blame someone for the Mexican problem in this country. Blame Clinton. His NAFTA caused millions in mexico to lose there jobs. So they came here, illegally. Even Zach DelaRoacha from the band RageAgainstTheMachine knows that. And he is as liberal as they come. Republicans are not the enemy. Its idiots like you who distort the truth that need to be put down. Shut up, you make us all sick. Pubs and dems.

The naivete on here is mind boggling. W Bush told you guys that sodom hussein had been hiding WMD and started a war. Turns out, it wasn't true. You all believed him. WMD were never found, 500,000 people have been killed, and $500,000,000,000.00 have been wasted. Shall I continue about the downward spiral this country has been in, the increased instability in Iraq, and refugees from the middle east who are immigrating here? President Nixon: With his Vietnam Refugee deal, is responsible for turning entire sections of cities in California into the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Little Saigon, and Laos! Eisenhower: Same deal to rescue South Koreans. Now Korea Towns have sprung up everywhere. Now you people are starting to reap the fruits of REPUBLICAN labor.
