Gotta get outta Texas
I live in East Texas, I am from here and have lived here most all my life. I did live in Laramie and Rawlins, WY for a few years. I can no longer take the heat, crime, and the minorities. I spent 12 years as a police officer here in Texas and i just cannot stand to live here anymore. I now work as a Purchaser/Buyer at a large Steel Mill plant. I am looking to move to Montana, Wyoming, Alaska or somewhere out there. I am wondering where i could go that the economy would support me and my family. I would like to find a small (3-5 acres) piece of land outside of a small town that i could have a garden and do my own hunting and fishing. I want to live off the land as much as possible. I am sick of television, computers, cell phones, noise, heat and pollution. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what i am trying to accomplish?
Thanks,
ZM

I'm reminded of a Paul Simon song by this post , (50 ways). Just hop on the bus Gus !
If you choose to move to Montana all I have to say is "Welcome neighbor" ! I left California for the same reasons.

Thanks, I all i know i am sick of this heat. I cannot take it much longer. I got in my truck to leave work yesterday and my mirror thermometer said 108 degrees. Plus a million percentage humidity rating. I am looking at South Dakota as well. I have to consider housing prices and with 2 kids i will have to find a affordable ($80's - $100 range) 3/2 home. Of Course that is considering i can find a job that pays at least what i am making now.

Now partner know that the 100's can happen here, I am in Eastern Montana. I moved from Oregon not so much the crime but the taxes were impossible to keep up with. Also I was beginning to be pretty good in about three languages at work However said, think hard about your move, visit in different seasons. Check with your spouse, it is not the kind of living for all gals, I being of the more hardy type who would not know a pedicure if it hit me There are quite a few folks who visit here on this board with good advice and know their way around. Land is pretty cheap here but jobs are few. Have you looked into the Border patrol, I hear they are hiring like everything. We have a few families up here on the Hi-Line. Now listen to me sounding like a local

If you go to work for the border patrol you will have to learn Spanish and you will have to be stationed on the southern border for many years before you can get posted on the northern border. The pay is pretty good but the job is really stressful. My best friend is a border patrol agent.

I am from western Montana, its a great place, but like all great places you cant seem to make a living. i had a really good job with the rail road, but still there wasn’t much of a future there so i move to Texas. and i don’t like most the things you listed there either!

Who told you this? My wife is in the process of becoming a border patrol agent and she does not have to learn spanish or move to the south. She has to go to a 3 month training course in Georgia, but she will be working out of Sweetgrass. The border is hiring like crazy up here. But the shifts and hours suck.

She got hired as a Customs and Border Protection Officer then, not Border Patrol Agent. CBP Officers are stationed at the ports of entry and and BP Agents work the areas between the physical entry points.

I just talked to a Border Patrol recruiter at the county fair yesterday and he said the same thing rickers posted.
