Just north of Browning, the trees are stunted only to match the ever constant winds that blow through the area on a regular basis.

The only place tougher than Browning in the winter is Heart Butte!

The weather on the eastside of the range (Browning) is harsh. the winds blow horizontal. It is 12 miles east of Glacier Park. Not a lot in town. Bring a lot of winter clothes and summer clothes as well as Montana summers can be very hot and dry, scorching the plains. It is hard to describe town without it sounding depressed, but it is. A visit is a must.

As a native Montanan I can't say I have very fond memories of Browning. It is very cold and depressing. The countryside in this area is not particularly appealing. I was a musician for many years based in Missoula and we played in Browning on a number of occations. To be blunt I would not advise you to consider this town. There are some very nice people who live there and I'm not saying anything against them but I have some disturbing memories of this place. The bar we used to play at was just outside the reservation and I have this awful memory of a guy who had been drinking all day and passed out at the bar but it was discovered that he had actually died and was just laying on the bar. That image bothered me for quite awhile. My advice, please don't consider this option.

Browning is the nastiest, most hateful city I have ever seen. It is extremely dirty and if you are not a fighter it won't matter, you'll be in some there. This is not an exaggeration. You are warned. Please visit first.

The photos didn't seem that bad. It just seems like a very small town. Changing my mind or making a visit aren't really options at this point but thanks for the desciptions. At least I can't go into it with rose-colored glasses. Thanks again for the suggestions on clothing.

I would advise you to visit Browning before making a decision. Yes, there are many nice people in Browning, but it isn't really a place for outsiders. If you move to the area, please consider living out in the country or in Cut Bank. You will be much safer.
As for the schools - look up test scores & rankings online. It is doubtful that they are of the same quality of those in the midwest, although the impact you could make on the student's lives will be greater.

Well, a visit isn't an option at this point. Don't have the money to visit and make it out there in April. Been placed for a job and I don't really have much of a choice as to where I live either. But determined to make the best go of it that I can. And all the advice has helped. Maybe I'm stupid for not trying to visit, maybe I'm determined, but more probably, I'm stupidly determined. But, thanks to all the posts here, I'm more prepared for what I will find than I was before I stumbled into the forum. Thanks for that.
