Glasgow.......
Did Glasgow at one time have an Air Force Base? If so, when did it close? Is it being used today?

Yes, Glasglow had a air force base at one time. It closed in 1976.
Today it is owned by Montana Aviation Research Company, a subsidiary of The Boeing Company. It is used for flight test operations on the new aircraft programs.
For more information, see http://www.boeing.com/commercial/tec...bts_flita.html

How close is Glasgow to the Canadian border and the Dakotas? Was that the only town where soldiers lived in that area? What schools did they go to?

The town of Glasgow is 60 miles from the border. The base was 15 miles north of town, though. Glasgow is 125 miles west of ND.
As for where the airmen (soldiers are in the Army )...I wasnt here then, but I'd guess they lived in most of the surrounding towns such as Opheim, Glasgow, Fort Peck and Nashua.

I grew up in Glasgow. The base had housing that is now being sold to private parties. The community is know as St. Marie. The homes are very cheap as they are old and run down. I don't think the Air Force planned on these homes being lived in 50 years later.
Glasgow was a very vibrant community back then with a population over 10,000. After the base closed it shrank to about 6000 and has slowing shrunk to less than 3000. The town is full of good people, but there is not a big employer besides the railroad and maybe the hospital. Some of the local businesses are doing well but most are just barely getting by. Most of the young people move on after high school and never go back as there are not many jobs appropriate for a college degree in Glasgow.
If they could attract a good company to locate there, they would have good, hard working folks to draw from for employees. But, as with most areas of Montana, the people in power oppose growth.

I lived in Glasgow until I was 12. We frequently had kids from the base in class, but I don't remember if the base also had its own elementary school.
