Default Sub Divisions In The Kalispell and Surrounding Areas???

What is the story with the sub divisions in the Kalispell and surrounding areas, no more prevalent than anywhere else or ridiculously out of control threatening to destroy the area?
Are there any zoning controls that prevent this at all in Montana?
Thank you.

No, no zoning in the Flathead to prevent subdivisions. They have some review requirements but generally the review boards are not highly empowered to stop projects. (Getting more stringent). I'd say the spraw in the Flathead is out of control and very sad.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on where you stand) there are very few laws concerning subdivisions, they tried but were shut down by anti regulation/property rights groups. They are still barfing out subdivisions albiet at a slower pace which makes no sense considering the housing market at this point. It's not yet at the point of destroying the area, more of an annoyence but if it continues it could get ugly. At this point there's so much open land that they're spaced well apart and the crazy part of this is how piecemeal this is being done, it looks like a patchwork quilt sort of... We have a new subdivision going in next to us and we can't figure out why the guy is doing it since nothing around here is selling at this point, unless he has to so he doesn't lose his plat approval. I'd think the county would just do a blanket extension on these plats so they aren't developed yet but what do I know.

"The Flathead" is not only the name of the valley but also the name of an Indian reservation, a river system, a mountain range and a huge lake. The name "Flathead" originated by either white pioneers or local native tribes. The reservation is home to primarily three native peoples, The Kootenai, the Bitterroot Salish and the Pend D' Orelle people. Many early native peoples practiced skull deformation of infants causing a cone head appearance. The Bitterroot Salish did not, so they had normal shaped heads and were labeled the Flatheads. The Bitterroot Salish were forced onto the reservation from their traditional home in the Bitterroot Valley.

If it is right next to you, and down wind preferably, pin up a big sign that says "FUTURE HOME OF JJIM's PIG FARM"

That will bring the development to almost a screaching hault . And you can go a step further if you like, go to an auction and pick up a little pig for a few bucks and pen him with the sign... be a little laxed in cleaning up after him too. Keep him there for as long as you can stand the smell. They don't cost much to feed and you can have him butchered when you are finished with him.
