What was your rate in the Navy? AD or AM? If it is either one of those and you really want to get into aviation, I'd suggest using your G.I. Bill at the A&P school in Helena. After getting your A&P there, they will help you with job placement. I do know that Rotocraft (formerly known as Garlick Helicopters) in Hamilton may open up 15 new positions there soon. Neptune Aviation in Missoula just added more P-2s to their fleet....but, very sadly lost one and its crew down in Nevada (broken link).
It's hard to get into the aviation field in Montana. There isn't much of it here. I would also recommend getting your IA (Inspector Authorization) ticket too. There is a need for inspectors to sign off on the technician's work (much like CDIs and CDQARs in the Navy). If you are familiar with Logs and Records that is a plus as well (get with the AZs and have them show you the ropes while you are still in, High-time tracking and all of that). With your experiance in Naval Aviation, the A&P school should be a cake-walk.
Should also keep in mind that aviation jobs in Montana do not pay near as well as they would elsewhere.
Welcome home and all the best to you.
P.S. Get familiar with the
FARs too.
