I'm going around thread to thread trying to accumulate some information on different states.
My family wants to move to a rural, convenient, natural, humble "town" or city, but we have no idea where to start.
We're from Hendersonville TN and are looking for somewhere midwestern, you know Farmhouse, land, maybe hills or a mountainous view.
But there are a few set backs, we can't afford anywhere very expensive.

Any Ideas?

I know of a rustic large place near Thompson Falls for $400 per month but it only has a wood stove for heat. I just moved out because I have a parrot and without thermostatically controlled heat the winter would be a bit rough on her. The place has a huge skylight, large windows, but also a few roof leaks and a huge gap under one of the doors. the old timer who owns the place doesn't do rental agreements he just wants the money each month with no last or deposit. It's called Sourdough village and is near the 7 mile marker on the road to Thompson Pass. Also there are no opening windows and the doors have no screens, also the carpets are filthy, there are live electrical wires hanging out of the walls and no light in the kitchen ! I've moved 3 times in the last 6 months looking for a decent but cheap place. Good luck and prepare for living next to a bunch of tweekers and drunks. A bit of advice before renting a place is to talk to the neighbors before signing anything, really cheap housing is hard to come by without getting stuck next door to lowlife types.

I'd stay in TN! Cost of living is cheaper there than here and there are more jobs. In fact, we're looking to go to TN if we can ever sell here.

Word of advice, don't come to TN. The weather isnt nice, the air is disgusting, and there is nothing here. If you move to TN, go to East TN near the NC state line. It's the only pretty area I've ever seen of TN and it's cheaper than middle TN

I would look for a job helping a rancher or his wife, cause the housing usually comes with that and that gets you Montana without the priciness and a built in food supply too in the event of more odd USA political and financial events. You can look at TheFencePost.com | Rural News from Colorado & Nebraska for starters. The other guys is right - if you rent or buy in too inexpensive an area in Montana, you definitely are going to be in with bad neighbors (and not all of them are Montanans). I know I tried it in 2 different Montana towns - one supposedly upper crusty and the other more poor...both inexpensive neighborhoods were very wild though they didn't look that way at first and we moved twice to get our kids away from it.
