Plevna
Back in the 1970s I worked a couple of summers as a combine operator and truck driver with a custom harvest crew, cutting wheat all around the great plains states. That was my "summer job" while attending college. A friend from college was from a family that ran the business out of TX and they would follow the wheat harvest from TX to MT and ND.
One town I remember was Plevna, out in eastern Montana. At that time, paved roads around Plevna were scarce, even power lines and phone lines in rural homes were scarce. I remember it well because it was near the end of the summer harvest season by the time we made it up to Montana. Plevna was one of the last stops. The town was unique because most of the people in the area were decendants of a group of Czech or Slovakian immigrants from the late 1800s, and many still spoke the eastern european language of their ancestors as a second language. A lot of the farmers in the area would have a nice gathering after the wheat was cut and sent off to the grain elevator, and one thing I remember was the rhubarb pie. That was the one and only place I have ever had that, but it sure tasted good after almost three hard months of work cutting wheat.
Anyone been through Plevna lately?
