Is an engine heater a "necessity"? No, back in the bad old days, many of us didn't have them. We usually managed to get going, even on the coldest days.
Is a block heater NICE TO HAVE? OH, YES, most definitely!

I may have told this story before but when we began to visit Montana about five years ago I though that there was some type of strange electric car situation going on around because of the electric plugs I saw hanging out of the rigs
Yes we have one over here, use it, great to have.
