Power outage
The power in my area just went out ! It's starting to get cold and I'm starting to get worried about my parrot. My heaters fuel source is natural gas but it needs electricity to operate the relays, thermostats, solenoid valves and the water pump. I Don't have a back-up generator and I have no Idea how long this outage will last. If it gets too cold I'll have to put her next to my neck in the bed with me.
What do ya know, the power just came back on ! Oh well It's four in the morning the 'ol lady is snoring, I'm going to have a beer for an early breakfast.

Laptop I'd bet. I use a laptop and have a battery backup that'll hold for about 2 hours for my router and modem just for those situations. It all came in real handy a couple of summers ago when we had that tornado hit in south Kalispell and head our way. We lost power and went under the house but was able to track things via the internet when all the radio stations went off the air.

Yup, it's an Acer laptop but the battery is really wimpy, only good for about 40 minutes. I have dial up and the phone lines don't go dead when the power goes out.

That sure was the strangest feeling at 3:30 in the morning - I was up when it went out...working on the computer and bam the whole house and town went out!

Several years ago I had to get a generator and keep it in good working order. We lose power several times a year here in the N.C. mountains and when we do, it seems to be out for several days. It gets mighty cold and quiet without any back-up. Keep your head down, it looks like you got a bad storm headed your way in the next few days.

Is your cookstove electric or gas? One reason that I use gas (mine is propane), is that I can light it with a match and heat one room of the house if the power goes out. Good luck.

On that note, y'all know they make a kit to turn a diesel pickup into a generator right? Puts out enough juice to easily power almost everything you'd need from lights to TV.

My wife wants to shed a few pounds so maybe I'll build a giant "hamster wheel" and make it run a generator. That way I can save on gym fees, I don't have to buy a Bow-flex or treadmill and end up with a skinny wife all in one fell swoop ! My god I hope she doesn't see this post ! She'll cut me off forever !
