i drive a 2005 nissan xterra (auto). i am planning on getting a engine block heater and battery blanket installed when i arrive to anchorage via ferry. It should cost me about $500, is that too much? is there anything else that i should have installed for my car in the freezing fairbanks weather?

Take a look on the internet for the parts then figure in what the labor cost runs per hour where you are now and that will tell you. I'd get it done before I got to Alaska, I'm willing to bet everything is more there. On a quick search a battery blanket is about $35 and a block heater from Jegs is about $30. The blanket you can put in easily and the block heater should run less than $100 to put in so yes, I'd say $500 is a rip.

I know they install what is called the "Fairbanks package" up there which also includes things like oil pan heater if I'm not mistaken.

This lady in her blog talks about the Fairbanks Package they recommend up there.

I remember way back in days of old when the cold snaps hit the old joke would go around.

" I'm gunna get in my car and drive south until they ask me what is that plug sticking out of your grill"
