Default Winter activities......

This cold spell means its time to pull out the ice shanty and get some ice fishin done. We set up the shanty, dump a pile of cold beer in the snow, and walk around visiting with the others folks on the ice. Folks come by and scoop up a beer and vice versa. We bring the coleman stove and boil up a batch of crab legs, maybe some hot cocoa and peppermint schnapps. Nothing better then sitting in the shanty, pulling up the rainbow and kokonee, while having a cold one with freinds and family. I love looking out over the snow swept lake with the mountains towering in the back ground. I always find great folks out on the ice. What is your favorite winter activity? One of my buddies loves to hunt cottontails on the river bottoms, might give that a whirl this year.

Do you like to light bonfires on the ice? We used to do that when I was a kid. My friends from California not only thought it was scary to walk on the frozen ice but they thought it was really scary when I'd light a fire on the ice!!

Driving cars on ice is another fun thing. I never did it but would frequently see a number of trucks driving around on Whitefish Lake. The railroad used to cut ice off of the lake I grew up on and throw it in the cold cars to keep them cold, prior to refrigerated railroad cars.

Nice story about the railroad, I didn't know that. Yeah, we drive on the ice when we can, 4wheelers mostly. It depends on what the plan for the day is. If we are serious about getting into the fins, we walk and move around a lot. If there is a few of us, it is more of a social event, and we drive out, set up shanty, and of coarse kick up a big fire on the ice and make it an all day event. Really, just an excuse to down a few cold ones. Sometimes we drive the pickup out and cook right off the tailgate with a coleman stove, or jetboil.
