There are many ghost towns in Western Montana. The Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society sells a map for a nominal fee. The Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society A Google search will give you much informtion.
We visited Virginia City which has been preserved, but there are many that are more rustic and some are quite remote.

Virginia City/Nevada City is a great one we like to visit as there are lot of things for the kids to see and play with (coin operated musical machines, train rides, etc.) We also enjoy visiting Bannack which the state now runs as a 1500 acre state park. These are a couple of the more commercialized ghost towns but there are plenty out there if you just want to visit and be on your own.

I wouldn't make a special trip but I like the ghost town of Medina. Not what you would think at all of a ghost town.

I vote for Garrnet Ghost town. It is in the Garnet mountains in between highway 200 and I-90. Access, if you know where to look, is east of Bearmouth from I-90 or off highway 200 in between Potomac and Greenough. This town is much less visited than Virginia City/Nevada City.

Getting to Garnet this time of year is probably impossible; perhaps on x-country skis from the Hwy 200 side - worth the visit when the snow is gone.

Another tough one this time of year is Granite in the mountains above Philipsburg.

Thanks Grizz, the snow factor occasionally slips my newbie mind, although one only has to step outside...
