Question Is Montana right for me?

Hey Everyone,

I posted in the Utah thread last week and am now thinking that maybe i should be looking into Montana instead. I currently live in Nashua, New Hamsphire and have a good paying Tech job but i have always wanted to move possibly out to Utah or Montana. Since im 26 i figure its the perfect time to make a move before settling down. I love snow, mountains, and lakes and out there seems like the perfect place. The catch is that i would need a good paying job and live in an area with a good sized population of single women my age. For some reason it seems that where there is snow and mountains there really arent any good paying tech jobs and/or many sinlge women.

So i was looking into Utah or Montana because of the beautiful lanscape and stuff i could do outside; Skiing, snowmobiling, taking my Xterra offroading, sooo many things. I also just got a Bluray moive that had Glacier National Park in it and wow is it beautiful.

I've read many post here which have been really informative but now im only more confused about where to move to. What do you guys think? Is Montana good for a guy like me or are there any other places i should be looking into?

Thanks and any help would be greatly appriciated!

-Nate

I am sure you will be receiving many an email from locals in various communities. Being a guy that first visited Montana at your age (nearly two decades ago), I would say target the largest populated areas and look up job ops in the area; contact their chamber of commerce for types of businesses in area (i.e. shopping, night life, etc); and also contact law enforcement and real estate companies for informal angles of the city of choice.

For me, when I visited so many years ago, I was blown away by the majesty of Montana. I loved the open hilly plains of some areas as they blended into forested and mountainous areas in a few and chasms of rock faced openings in the land where streams now or once existed in others. But, at the time, as much as I appreciated the beauty of Montana, I don't think it was right for me at the time since it was a bit slower than the lifestyle I was leading down in Los Angeles.

Now, having more perspective what with moving cross country and traveling all over the world, Montana will be one of those escapes for me away from the nonsense of a fast paced life. Knowing that I would eventually feel that way, I bought property back in 2001 in the middle of Montana close to town but far enough away to avoid large development. We'll build there probably in the next decade a small yet comfortable home... not so big so that the land can breathe!

Nonetheless, tech jobs exists everywhere but pay scales vary greatly. Can't say anything about salary in MT, but I imagine the larger salaries will be fewer and more competitive. Certainly in areas with big business. Though you may still need to travel to find better paying contracts.

Nightlife is everywhere as well. Depends on what you seek. The more women that exist, the more competition I imagine. However, I found plenty of places in areas I've visited in Montana... some greater than others. But at twenty six, I wanted more.

Have you also looked at the Pacific Northwest? Lots of good companies there, though many are indeed laying off. You'll need to contact each and every one to find out their current status.

Good luck, however. Montana is a beautiful place. Not for everyone. And I like that since real country is accessible and not easily appreciated or managed by just any city slicker. Still a well kept secret from most of the country, I'd say.

Thank you so much for your detailed response. I dont drink and am not really into nightlife at all so i guess im pretty boring for 26. haha. Ill first check at dice.com and other sites for jobs out there to see whats available. I was thinking about Oregon and Washington at first but in some of the research it didnt seem many people were happy there and the weather seems more wet and rainy than dry and snowy. Thanks again for your help.

Just bear in mind that any time you try soliciting opinions and responses from others, those replying are generally coming from their perspective and tolerance levels. One person's cold is another person's warm. Take valuable opinions with a grain of salt and finalize your own judgment through your own experiences. Good luck!

If you're looking for beautiful women, Utah is where it's at.
I don't know what percentage of them are single. And I'm assuming a larger percentage are mormon. But wow. As far as I'm concerned, Utah is the hot woman capital of the country.

There are definitely attractive, single ladies in Montana, though. However, not a lot of tech jobs. And definitely not a lot of high paying tech jobs.

I agree, Utah has some hot chicks, much cuter than the Montana babes (sorry ladies). As for jobs that pay well... well, those are even harder to find in Montana than pretty women!

The good news is this, if you need a gal to help you haul 4 tons of hay before lunch, Montana has some tough gals (who cares if they're a little ugly if they can do that!).

As CaliBoy said in post #4: "One person's cold is another person's warm."

Try Seattle. Lots of high tech jobs and tons of women. I'm a Montana native and it's an eye opener when I walk around here. Lots of women!

I got lucky, I married a Wyoming girl; they're cute and they can work as hard as anyone.

As for Seattle, I travel through there on my way to Alaska several times a year and I have to agree, they are very nice to look at.
