Default Has Missoula changed much?

I attended U of Montana in the mid 80's, and loved living in Missoula. I live in Portland, OR now which is a pretty nice city, but dream of returning to Missoula some day with my current employer. I don't know when or if that will happen any time soon. How would you compare the Missoula of today with the Missoula of the 80's? Has it changed much? I was back there visiting the summer of 07 and had a nice time. Rafted the gourge, drank at Red's etc. I wa thinking how nice it would be to live there again. I still have close friends in Missoula. Some negative things I noticed was trash on the sidewalks, and more crowded roads. The rattlesnake trailhead was packed with cars, which I had never experienced before. I hear how the city is polarized, meaning the old Missoula, and new residents don't get along. So how has Missoula changed over the years? I would like to hear the good, bad, and ugly. Thanks,

I went to the U in the late 50s - early 60s and even then Missoula was regarded as pretty eclectic town. It's even more so today as we embrace all sorts of foolishness, life styles, and weirdness in the name of diversity. I came back here in the early 90s but I don't embrace all the diversity nostrums, prefering to believe that that crap will lead to the Balkanization of America as it seems to be happening.

As I've stated here before, I rarely go North of the River as I just don't want to mingle with the folks that live and work there. Missoula just received the title of Drug Capital of the NW in local news broadcast I heard the other day. Great! But what does one expect when the local populus decided in a recent election to cause the police to make majariana offenses their bottom priority.

Should the Montana Grizzly Football team ever have a losing year, I'm out of here!!!

Yeah, there are definitely drugs in Missoula (same as anywhere else). But I'd be willing to bet most drug use in Missoula is marijuana, and not hard drugs. Maybe I'm just uninformed, but that's the way it seems. But if that's the case, I definitely wouldn't name Missoula the "Drug Capital of the NorthWest".

As far as what Missoula is currently like in comparison to the 80's, I don't really know. Higher population, more traffic, etc. But that's the obvious stuff.

IMHO The feel of U of M campus area is a twin of the U of O campus, maybe a few less burkenstock because of the snow.
