Wow you're right. I just snooped about and there isn't diddly but for a few ridiculously priced rentals. You may want to contact some Realtors and see if you can rent a vacant house that is for sale. Many of those are just sitting there empty and if you don't mind showing the place to prospective buyers or even let the realtor tour the prospect through when you're not there, I bet you could swing a good deal but you would most likely have to skedaddle on short notice if the place sells.

Haven't they been renovating the base housing there? They did here at Edwards, and frankly it's now the best part of town to live in, from what I can see.

Ah. Why is that? I'm not up on the current rules.
Asking a realtor about vacant houses-for-sale is a good thought. Some that are unable to sell in this down market without losing their shirts might be willing to negotiate a longer-term lease which could cover you for the duration of your tour in GtF.

Another place to check is trailer parks. They often have rental units available, from minimal to fairly nice, and they may not advertise in the usual venues -- many just post a sign at the entrance when they have a vacancy. They are usually quiet places to live and often cheaper than an apartment.
And thank you for helping keep America strong with your service!
