Question Malta Montana on today's Sunday Morning program

There was a very interesting segment on this morning's tv program, Sunday Morning, about dinosaurs found in the Malta, MT area. Is there a science/dinosaur museum in the town? Is ther a university in the area? Someday, I would like to visit the area. Does anyone have any information about the area?

Default No College

There is no college or university. Malta is a small farming/ranching community. There isn't much there at all. That being said the museum linked to above is an amazing museum. There is even a chance that if you ask the right questions and talk to the right people they will let you go in back and look at (and even in some cases) work on the bones.

Two more things about Malta. There is no airport with service anywhere close. You would fly into Billings or Great Falls and then drive 200 miles to get there. You can ride Amtrak with a stop in town. If you drive be prepared for long periods of time with no other cars on the road. The next thing is that there isn't a ton other than the museum to do in the area. You could go 80 miles to a lake or the missouri breaks monument. You could go to the wild life refuge or 70 miles to Mission Canyon or Zortman. In Malta proper you will be bored stiff.

There are some events that would make it more entertaining if your visit coincided with: Outlaw days, the cattle drive (ends in Malta after a couple thousand mile drive with a bbq), the county fair (oldest continuous fair west of the Mississippi), drag races, or rodeos.

Make sure that Leonardo is going to be in Malta that year if you decide to travel. Leonardo (the mummy dinosaur Malta is famous for - famous enough that Discovery did a whole special on him) spends 1/3 to 1/2 of its time in Malta and the rest in the Smithsonian and Natural history museums around the country on special display.
