Smile Flea/Tick & Heartworm in Belgrade/Bozeman area

I am new to town and never had to deal with flea/ticks and heartworm for my 2 weimaraners and 2 short hair cats that stay inside a majority of the time. What products seem to work the best for you or do you recommend? When do you need to start using the products? Then when do you stop using the products? I guess the real question is do they really need it here?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Fleas shouldn't be an issue but there are tics and heart-worm in Montana.

You're going to need to go to a vet. Heartworm preventative is vet RX only and they won't give it until the animals are tested first. If you aren't familiar with heartworm, you need to go away a do a bit of reading. It's not something to be ignored. Prevention couldn't be easier, cure is a different matter. There's a ton of info available online. "Heartguard" is the propriatary name of the one that seems to be most commonly used.

Any OTC flea/tick product - i.e. Frontline or similiar - should do the job. I don't know about the actual prevalence of Lyme's disease in Montana, but if your dogs go into brush, tall grasses, etc. make sure to visually inspect them later and remove/kill any imbedded ticks (there are a variety of methods, pick whichever you prefer).

You can get drops that are a 2-in-1 that go on the skin (back of the neck where it can't be ingested) - Multi-Advantage is one example - that covers heartworm and fleas, but it doesn't cover ticks, so you still need to use a tick repellant.

Hope this is helpful.
