You're going to need to go to a vet. Heartworm preventative is vet RX only and they won't give it until the animals are tested first. If you aren't familiar with heartworm, you need to go away a do a bit of reading. It's not something to be ignored. Prevention couldn't be easier, cure is a different matter. There's a ton of info available online. "Heartguard" is the propriatary name of the one that seems to be most commonly used.
Any OTC flea/tick product - i.e. Frontline or similiar - should do the job. I don't know about the actual prevalence of Lyme's disease in Montana, but if your dogs go into brush, tall grasses, etc. make sure to visually inspect them later and remove/kill any imbedded ticks (there are a variety of methods, pick whichever you prefer).
You can get drops that are a 2-in-1 that go on the skin (back of the neck where it can't be ingested) - Multi-Advantage is one example - that covers heartworm and fleas, but it doesn't cover ticks, so you still need to use a tick repellant.
Hope this is helpful.
