Hey Notar...........
Weather here in Ravalli County - Bitterroot Valley-- (Stevensville, Hamilton etc) is pretty normal:
partly cloudy--partly sunny.....lows at night in the 20's....highs in the day around 47 to 50F. Some periodic showers. No snow on the ground (valley floot at 3500' +/-) Foothills and mountains of the Bitterroots are starting to get a fair amount........up around 7000/8000' up to 24".
I just got a call from a long time friend and elk huntin' buddy from Left Hand Canyon (west of Boulder, CO) this morning. He just got back from elk huntin' on the west slope in CO. (He's a Korean War Vet - Marine- been fighting bladder cancer for 3 years) ..He got a 6x6!! He found 28" of snow in his driveway when he got home. He's about 4 miles up the canyon and at about 6750'. That area of the front range of the Rockies from just south of Boulder up to Fort Collins is really getting hammered!!! Some areas in Larmier county have up to 33" ON THE LEVEL, plus some wind drifting. I used to live 3 miles up Sunshine Canyon, west of Boulder (6950') from 1965 to 1980.... I don't miss that much snow at all.
Sorry to hear about your friend.
Ketch ya later...........Griz
Forgot to ask....Do you also fly fixed wing? Float planes?
Also, since you obviously love our Montana mountains, wildlife etc.....I must tell you....when I was out side this morning at daybreak (putting my Brittany out in the dog run), I had 11 wild turkey within 100 yards of the house and just before elk season opened, I had a herd of 17 cow & 4 bull elk on my place for a few days. The wolves have dramatically changed the habits for the local elk in his area. Prior to 3 years ago, I hardly ever had elk hang aroung my place. Now the past 3 years...every april and October, they stop by and hang around(for safety from the wolves), for anywhere from 3-4 days up to 3 weeks last October. I'm located just a half mile from the actual beginning of the mountains and between two major drainages.

Montana Griz,
Sound like heaven, even the snow. I love to hear the wolves, if anyone can see or hear them and it doesnt stir their soul, they must be dead inside. Good Job on you buddies Elk, sound like he deserves a good hunt to cheer him up.I happen to have a blk/wht Springer that loves to chase birds. I fly the MD 500 series Helicopter for a multi Jurisdictional Law Enforcement Agency..I just got my ticket in external load operations, looking for a job fighting fires when I retire,
great to hear from you guys

Seven, I love your costume I go out as an ordinary person (admittedly this takes some work to pull off), because everyone knows that axe murderers look just like everyone else!
Notar, you can check MT weather here:
National Weather Service - NWS Great Falls
I see it's supposed to be warmer in Fort Benton tonight than here in the SoCal desert!
Did I ever post the pics I got of the water-dropping helicopter, taken from my roof? Wind was blowing 35-45mph that day and it was all the pilots could do to stay out of the power lines. Judging by how quick they got new loads, I'd guess they were scooping from the sewage treatment plant, which is only a few miles down the way and the only open water around here.

Old military training. If you wake up, be ready. I did. Woke up, got dressed, started coffee, turned on the tv. Checked watch. It's fricken midnight. hahaha Oh well, went out and sat on the porch for a bit. My son has been up Elk Hunting for the last 3 weekends. I had two cow elk in the yard this morning. They looked up when I walked out and sat down. Then went back to grazing. Even the neighbor dogs wandered over for a visit. Elk looked at them like everything was normal. Guess I'll have to drag the cross bow out so I can fill the freezer.

Elk you wonder if the great hunter in the sky just brings one to you broadside occasionally
If I am not careful I will take a "nap" after work then it is heck to pay getting to bed on time for the early shift.
Good to hear from you, post a photo of an elk if you can. We hunted in the coastal range for many years with a horse to pack it out. On the prairie it is a bit of an African hunt with the rig running full speed. Kinda exciting!
Waiting on the hubs right now, thermos is full. Wish us luck. We too enjoy a full freezer.
BTW to all visitors, the Big Timbers thread has great photos from a poster who originally was asking about a relative who may have homesteaded there but now there are photos of Wales on the thread. Enjoy!
