All this talk about hunting has brought back some really wonderful memories. My Grandfather was a hunter, it wasn't for sport, it was to feed the family.
He would start with small game (Pheasant, Rabbit & Squirrel), Turkey and Deer. In addition to shotgun & rifle - he also used bow & arrow.
I don't have any recipes to share, but it certainly was good food.

Someone told me that elk is awsome meat??
I have never tried it, so I guess once we
get there and hubby is ready to hunt then
maybe we can.
At any rate, I am ready for some turkey bird,
coming up really soon!!

LOL...we saw some of those guys strutting around someone's yard in a neighborhood in Kalispell. Some poor lady was walking her dog by and didn't see them until it was too late....

My former neighbours had a pet tom turkey... if you keep feeding 'em, turkeys keep on growing, and this one, being excessively well-fed, was right up around 50 pounds. One day he came over to visit, just bein' friendly and curious in the usual way of turkeys, so I scratched his ear how birds usually like ... well, that was a mistake. He decided he was in lust with me and started trying to hump my leg. Now, ordinarily that'd just be comical, but he was big enough to knock a person down, and there was no shooing him off. I finally picked him up and carried him home, and put him in the corral where he couldn't get out. And that's when I realised how big he really was -- he weighed the same as a full feed sack!

Matter of taste, I suppose, and doubtless the skill of whoever prepared it (from hunt to table, all has to be done right) ... I'll eat venison and elk if someone puts it in front of me, but it wouldn't be my first choice; I much prefer beef... tho I do really like elk liver and deer sausage. Not overly fond of duck or goose either, tho I'll eat 'em if they fall on my head. But I love rabbit and pheasant!!
