Oh and Reziac, I won't disclose what I usually call my wife's dog, suffice to say it has something to do with his predilection for previously ingested foodstuffs!!
Haha, that one looks like the horse is thinking, "Willya look at what the humans are doing in there??! "

I know the name you mean --- viewed objectively, dogs are disgusting creatures I call little puppies "Poophead". I tried making it something different, but then it got worse!

Horses are such marvelous creatures.
I grew up with a few on the dairy. Most of our horses would be embarrassed to stand with these Montana ones. Usually they were a trade for a load of hay. One a Quarter horse, had been raced too close to the wrong side of a cut barrel and had a terrible wound. My pop, convinced he could save her, brought her home and stitched her up, lots of that purple iodine you know. That one followed him for the rest of her life like a dog. We never had to do any real cutting, dairy cattle get there when they are ready you know. But lots of time was spent playing John Wayne, reins in the teeth of course with the bb gun trying to make it spin like in True Grit. I never saw real draft horses until I moved to Oregon and saw them gee/haw in the woods. We are sure lucky to have MTS posting such family memories.
This is why I love this thread.

We have had primailly Belgians for the last 40+ years. Dad likes them because of their intelligence, ease of training, and the fact that when you hook one onto something, either what you hook to moves, or something breaks.

He has a log chain that when he was pulling a huge tree with first team, was so heavy and they pulled so hard, that chain is almost a solid steel bar. The links were stretched to the point that the center section of the chain won't bend anymore.
They did get the tree out by the way. Those two, Eagle and Angel were powerful beyond reason. He was working them full time in those days, and those horses were basically trained athletes. He could hook them to logs and send them to the bunk by themselves. Then someone would unhook the logs and the horses would go back to Dad by themselves. They were for all intents, his skidding crew.

Cody is a very strong and large horse. He was only used for pulling a wagon load of dudes for most of his early life, so he isn't as knowlegeable about the timber as most of Dad's horses, but he won't quit.
Jody is a little flaky and doesn't do well in the timber, but pulls a wagon fine. He uses them as a team in parades pulling floats.

We tried Clydsdales, Shires, some crossbreeds, but for what we do, day in day out, Belgians are the best fit with the most heart.
We have friends that use Belgians. We often take the wagon and to down to their place and they harness up and then we head out for a day's trip. They have mud bogs in the summer on their place. When one of the boggers get stuck, they use 6 Begians to pull them out. haha Great animals. They also use a team of Belgians to hay during the summer. They mow and rake but use a farmhand to pull the bailer.

Default Life's opportunities.... Those missed, and those taken

MTSilvertip.. Just finished reading you last few posts.. There are so many thoughts and feelings those posts brought to my mind.. So many of us wish we had spent more time with our dads.. The two of you can be close, but still not hang around together as much as you'd like.. Not do things together as much as you'd like.. And it usually isn't that the opportunities aren't there.. You just get in the habit of saying to yourself .. "next time".. But life has a way, often many ways, of letting those opportunities slip by.. And once they're gone........ well, they're gone.. When I looked at the picture of your dad standing inside the unfinished cabin that the two of you are building together, leaning against the wall, looking out the window...... well, it got to me.. You're a blessed man.. but I expect you know that.

I just mentioned 'the porch' in another thread where I particpate with a handful of very good people..(and I 'met' them because we send for freebies....LOL......it's such fun to see what the mailman brings!!!!)...you are all so giving, so sharing, so interesting, quite intelligent, hard-working, and definitely salt-of-the-earth-people......and I feel so fortunate to be a part of this online group!

It's definitely spring here...I've heard lawnmowers all morning......song birds..... I've done a few repairs around the house, (something always needs fixed), have a load in the washer, (seems like I am always doin' laundry), and am on my way out the door to do errands...

I hope that everybody has a nice weekend!

Hey all, just thought I'd pop by the porch real quick to see what's up and let y'all know that we're still kicking around. We've been all over, WV,KY,IN and are now in TX on our way back to AZ to judge another bbq comp. If you've ever watched "pitmasters" on TLC then you'll know what we're doing. We actually got to judge/meet a few of the people who were on that show, real nice people and decent bbq cooks (they didn't win the comp btw).
We've been through hail, wind, heavy rain, (did I say wind?) thunder, just missed a tornado and some real, real nice HEAT!
Hope everyone's well, I'll check back soon when our aircard allows...

Where in WV did'ja go? I'm in North-Central near Clarksburg. Just sold a dandy vertical smoker I've had for over 12 years (moving to MT- gotta lighten the load).

Cooked a lot of smoked meats on that puppy.

Threerun, cool verticle, you're gonna miss that puppy, I know I miss mine (didn't fit in the 5th wheel)...

We were in the un-heathiest city in the nation, Huntington. Has anyone been watching Jamie Oliver's show? If you haven't seen it I'd highly suggest watching it next week! He went to Huntington to see if he could affect the way they eat by going to a grade school and working with 'em. The kids didn't even know the names of veggies!
Not only that, the lunch ladies pretty much did everything they could to resist him cooking fresh food instead of processed junk (kind of the fight I went through with my son's district in MT years ago). After visiting that city I can understand why it's the way it is. It looks like the pizza capitol of the world.
He showed the kids how chicken nuggets were made (which is disgusting btw) and asked if they'd rather have them or fresh chicken and they wanted the nuggets even though they KNEW it was bad for them.
My how I do go off on a tangent don't I?
Ok, off my soapbox for now, planning on going to Fort Worth today I think...
The one fun thing we did in KY was the Bourbon Trail. Most all of the Bourbon distillers are in one area of KY and they have a tour map set up and you get a shirt if you visit all of 'em. For those that are wondering, yes you get samples at each one. We went to Makers Mark, Jim Beam, 4 Roses, Wild Turkey (where we met the master distiller) and a couple others. Interesting how it's made but I don't get how people like to drink it.... Tastes like mouthwash to me!
Here the guy is saying "can you taste the vanilla and toasted wheat finish"? and I'm thinking "hmmmm, should I garggle and spit"?
They let us sample Mint Julips like they drink at the derby and I gotta tell ya it looked just like scope and tasted darn close!
